How to make pizza dough? Here is your answer. In addition this is the healthiest pizza dough recipe out there. Follow this recipe and make your own homemade pizza dough without sugar using whole wheat flour. It’s not only tasty and healthy but also an easy pizza dough that doesn’t require any high level cooking skills.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water, room temperature

  • 1 cup water, boiling

  • 3 tsp active dry yeast

  • 3 1/2 cup whole wheat flour, divided

  • 2 tsp salt

Whole Wheat Pizza Dough

Directions:

  1. Pour room temperature water and boiling water in a big bowl. Add yeast and stir well. Let it sit for 5 - 10 minutes.

  2. Once the yeast-water mixture is ready, add salt and give it another good whisk.

  3. Now gradually add 3 cups of flour (save the rest) to the water mixture and mix well. It’s ok if it seems to wet at the moment. You will add more flour later.

  4. Now cover the bowl with a plastic foil and towel. Let it sit for at least 2 hours in a warm place.

  5. Once your dough has risen, put it on a floured surface and start kneading it for a few minutes adding ½ cup of flour ( more or less if necessary to avoid stickiness)

  6. Roll out your dough using a rolling pin. You want to roll it out as thin as possible without the dough starting to break apart. (about 0.5 cm or ¼ in)

  7. Put it on a non-stick baking pan. You might want to lightly sprinkle flour over it before laying your dough on it to avoid sticking later. Or use a pizza stone.

  8. Spread your favorite sauce and drop all of your favorite topping on top of the pizza dough. A great one is this pesto recipe along with mushrooms and tomatoes on top.

  9. Put it in the pre heated oven of 500*F for 7-10 minutes.

Notes:

You can also prepare more dough at once and freeze the unused dough after you have accomplished step 5. Simply put it in a container with a lid or a ziploc and drop it in the freezer. If you want to use it at a later time, take it out of the freezer and put in the fridge the night before. Then continue with step 6.

The best way to tell if your pizza is fully cooked, is to look at the bottom of the crust after it has been in the oven for a while. A well-browned and crispy crust, will be an indication of a pizza that is done. The crust will get crispy during the last one to two minutes of baking. If your crust seems soft and gooey when lifted, keep it in the oven for longer.

Make sure your yeast is fresh and still active when doing this recipe. Your dough won’t rise as it should, if your yeast has gone bad. If you are not sure whether your yeast is still good or not, you can proof test it by dissolving 1/2 tsp of sugar in 1/4 cup of warm water. Sprinkle with 1 tsp of active dry yeast. Stir and let it stand for 10 minutes. If the yeast has produced a foamy layer on the surface, it means its active.
